My Story

Duke Innovation & Entrepreneurship

Duke was the obvious choice for me because of the well-rounded nature of the school. I grew up in a suburb of Boston, went to a private high school, and played club soccer, so competition was always around me. At Duke, though, I immediately was drawn the collaborative nature of the school, especially in engineering. Additionally, students seemed to have a great balance of academic and social life with plenty of school spirit. I found this all to be true upon my arrival at Duke.

My major is Biomedical Engineering with a certificate in Innovation & Entrepreneurship. I knew I always wanted to work close to medicine and enjoyed hands-on learning, which drew me to BME. I have also always been interested in entrepreneurship and wanted to have a well-rounded understanding of medical device companies as businesses, which is why I added on my I&E certificate. My I&E coursework so far has build my foundational knowledge in finance and business such that I am familiar with concepts that may come up in my future career in the medical device industry. I also see in the far future potentially having a medical device startup of my own, so of course this course work will be especially relevant then. My current involvement with entrepreneurship has been through my internships. I worked as an intern in MedTech consulting where many of the clients I worked with were younger medical device companies. I also worked as an intern for a young medical device company. The CEOs of each of these companies were also the founders, and since each company was so small, I was exposed to the many facets of the businesses besides just the work I was assigned. Both of these internships further fueled my passion for medical device entrepreneurship.

Outside of school, I love to go running. I recently ran a half marathon by myself, so now it's time to sign up for a race! One thing that people should know about me is that I put a lot of effort into everything that I do. If I am going to take on an assignment or a project, whether for school, work, or my personal life, I will go full force into it.

My ultimate goal is to improve the lives of many patients. A coworker once told me that as a doctor you can save the lives of thousands of patients, but as an engineer you can save the lives of millions because you create the tools that thousands of doctors can use. I wholeheartedly believe this and hope that my work can benefit many individuals.
